Bee-Coming Leaders: A Bee School for Kids!

A Bee School for Kids? Yes!!

Did you know that a single bee hive can produce up to 100 pounds (45 kg.) of honey, or that bees are responsible for pollinating up to 1/3 of our food?

Beekeeper Markus Storhas & Nutritionist Tricia Sedgwick have developed a bee school to help kids ages 5-11 be leaders in their community. This 4-part workshop series is hosted at The World In A Garden and incorporates fun hands-on activities like planting bee gardens, looking inside beehives and extracting honey!

For the final session, we set up a market stand for the children so they can sell the fruits of their labour and share what they have learned with the community. Additionally, the market is an opportunity to teach our young entrepreneurs about a local, sustainable food economy.  It promises to be a fun and yummy experience – there’s nothing like eating honey straight from the hive!

BEE SCHOOL YOUNG LEADERS PROGRAM: This year, we are excited to offer a NEW Bee School Young Leaders Program for youth ages 11-14!

Our Young Leaders will develop leadership skills and receive mentoring sessions where they will learn more about native pollinators and environmental stewardship. Over the week, they will explore how to encourage pollinators in our city through fun hands-on activities, nature observations and lessons. The reflection of their learning will be the development of an educational Bee Kit that they will take home and use to educate others.

Registration for the Bee School Young Leaders Program is now available!

This program is free with space for up to 10 participants.

Thank you to Vancouver Foundation and Neighbourhood Small Grants for supporting our program!
