Communal Garden 2017
We have two gardens located at W 56th and W 57th Ave on East Blvd in Kerrisdale, Vancouver. In total there are about 25 raised beds of various sizes, as well as fruit trees and native plants. Preference is given to applicants who live in the neighbourhood, although all are encouraged to apply!
What is a Communal Garden?
Being part of a Communal Garden means that you collaborate with other Communal Garden members to help take care of the garden as a whole, rather than renting out an individual plot. Members work together to make decisions, share the space, plant & harvest food, and oversee garden maintenance (watering, weeding, composting etc).
Since we started practicing the Communal Garden model in 2013, we’ve experienced more meaningful connections, skill and knowledge sharing, and higher food production at our garden.
What if I’m a total beginner?
That’s the beauty of our model! You’ll learn from others who have a wide variety of experience and skills to share, and over the rhythm of the growing season you’ll experience alongside your garden mates the tasks and techniques needed to maintain the garden.
When do we meet?
During our first Garden meeting in March or April we will decide on a regular day of the week to meet, depending on everyone’s availability. Work parties are typically 2 hours long. The season will end in mid-October.
Please expect to attend and communicate with the group regularly, with the exception of vacations and other commitments. This consistency helps everyone build relationships, make decisions, and complete gardening tasks much easier. There may also be occasional community events such as garden potlucks or end of season dinner that we will organize together.
How much is membership?
The membership fee is $45 per member and includes an individual Society Membership for The World In A Garden. This is an annual membership.
The membership fee covers the following items:
• Seeds and starter plants
• Soil and fertilizer
• Tools/shed/infrastructure (including repairs)
What happens to the food we grow?
We harvest and divide it equally amongst Communal Gardeners. During our work parties we also sell surplus produce in the form of a roadside market, with proceeds going back to the garden.
How many people can join?
We are opening this opportunity to 16 members, first come first serve. Once we exceed 16 members we will create a wait list.
We want to make sure this garden is the right fit for you! Before you apply, see how you feel about the following statements:
- I’m happy to collaborate and share the garden with others
- I can communicate with the team in a friendly, respectful manner
- I’m able to attend the work parties at the designated time
- I can conveniently commute to Kerrisdale where the garden is located
Sounds good to me! How do I join?
Please complete our application form but do not make any payment until approved. Joey Liu, our Community Development Coordinator, will contact you first to let you know if/when to make payment.
Additionally, if you are interested in leading garden work parties as a Communal Garden Leader, please get in touch with us.
Thank you, and we can’t wait to grow with you!
